What Is World Cotton Day?

World Cotton Day is a global observance dedicated to recognising the importance of cotton and the people connected with its production and value chain.

Cotton is not simply a material used to make clothes. It supports farming communities, creates employment and contributes to national and international trade.

The cotton journey starts with cultivation and continues through harvesting, ginning, spinning, weaving or knitting, dyeing, finishing, garment manufacturing, transportation, retail and final use.

This makes cotton an excellent example of how agriculture, industry, trade and everyday life are connected.

FAO describes cotton as an important source of livelihoods for millions of smallholders, workers and their families. The organisation also highlights cotton's role in the economies of developing countries.

Why Cotton Matters

Cotton is important because it connects several areas of economic and social life.

Farmers cultivate cotton. Workers help process the fibre. Textile companies turn it into yarn and fabric. Designers create products. Tailors and garment workers convert fabric into clothing. Traders and retailers bring products to consumers.

Therefore, a cotton shirt may represent the work of many people before it reaches a customer.

FAO estimates that cotton is grown by around 24 million farmers worldwide and provides employment for an estimated 125 million people across the value chain.

This explains why World Cotton Day is not only about a fibre. It is also about people, employment, trade, skills and economic opportunity.

Cotton from Farm to Fabric

The journey of cotton involves several stages.

1. Cotton Cultivation

Farmers grow cotton plants in suitable climatic conditions. The crop requires proper planning, cultivation, crop management and harvesting.

2. Harvesting

When cotton bolls mature and open, the cotton fibre is harvested. Harvesting methods can differ according to farming systems and technology.

3. Ginning

Ginning separates cotton fibre from the seeds. The fibre is cleaned and prepared for further processing.

4. Spinning

The cotton fibre is converted into yarn through spinning.

5. Weaving or Knitting

Yarn is transformed into fabric through weaving or knitting.

6. Dyeing and Finishing

Fabric may be dyed, printed, treated and finished according to its intended use.

7. Manufacturing

Fabric is converted into clothing, home textiles, bags and other products.

8. Distribution and Retail

Finished products move through transportation, wholesalers, retailers and online marketplaces before reaching consumers.

This entire journey creates opportunities for different professions.

Cotton and India

India is one of the world's major cotton-producing countries. FAO lists China, India, Brazil, the United States and Pakistan among the top five cotton-producing countries. Together, these countries account for more than three-quarters of global production.

Cotton has a long connection with India's agricultural and textile economy.

It is connected with:

  • Cotton farming
  • Handloom
  • Textile manufacturing
  • Garment production
  • Tailoring
  • Fashion
  • Home textiles
  • Traditional clothing
  • Modern clothing
  • Textile exports

India's cotton sector therefore connects rural agriculture with manufacturing and consumer markets.

Cotton in Everyday Life

Many cotton products are used every day.

Examples include:

  • Shirts
  • T-shirts
  • Sarees
  • Kurtas
  • Dresses
  • Trousers
  • Bedsheets
  • Pillow covers
  • Towels
  • Handkerchiefs
  • Curtains
  • Kitchen cloths
  • Cotton bags
  • Children's clothing
  • Home furnishings

FAO reports that approximately 80 percent of cotton is used in apparel, while the remaining cotton is used in home textiles and industrial products.

Cotton's widespread use makes it an important part of the textile economy.

Cotton, Trade and Economic Opportunity

The 2026 World Cotton Day theme gives particular importance to trade, transformation and partnership.

Trade allows cotton and cotton products to move between producers, manufacturers and consumers.

Transformation means creating greater value from cotton through processing and manufacturing.

Partnership means cooperation among farmers, governments, researchers, businesses, workers and other organisations.

Value addition can create additional employment and economic opportunities. Instead of selling only raw material, cotton can be transformed into yarn, fabric and finished products.

FAO specifically highlights local manufacturing and by-product development as opportunities to increase economic returns and job creation.

Cotton and Women

Women have an important role in cotton production and the wider textile value chain.

FAO estimates that women account for about 43 percent of the labour force in cotton production, with important roles including planting and harvesting, particularly in Africa and Asia.

Women can also participate in:

  • Spinning
  • Weaving
  • Sewing
  • Embroidery
  • Garment making
  • Textile design
  • Home-based production
  • Retail
  • Online selling
  • Small textile businesses

Skills and access to markets can help create additional economic opportunities.

Cotton and Small Businesses

Cotton can support many types of small businesses.

A person with sewing skills can offer tailoring services.

A designer can create a small clothing brand.

A home-based entrepreneur can make cotton bags, cushion covers, table runners or other textile products.

A seller can build an online store for cotton clothing or home products.

A content writer can create educational articles about cotton fabrics, clothing care, sustainable textiles and textile businesses.

Therefore, the cotton sector is not limited to farming or large factories. It can also create opportunities for small entrepreneurs.

4. Spinning

5. Weaving किंवा Knitting

Finishing
