Professional Yoga Course – Class 2

What Is Yoga?

ENGLISH VERSION

Introduction

Yoga is a traditional practice that brings attention to the relationship between the body, breath and mind. It is much more than performing physical postures. Yoga includes physical practices, breathing practices, concentration, relaxation and a mindful approach to everyday life.

For a beginner, understanding what yoga actually means is important before moving into more advanced practices. When a learner understands the purpose behind each practice, yoga becomes a structured skill rather than simply a collection of exercises.

In Class 1, we introduced yoga and discussed why people may begin a yoga practice. In Class 2, we will understand what yoga is, what the word yoga means, the major components of yoga, how yoga differs from ordinary physical exercise, and how a beginner can approach yoga safely and consistently.

1. What Does the Word Yoga Mean?

The word Yoga comes from the Sanskrit root “Yuj.” It is commonly associated with meanings such as joining, connecting or bringing together.

In practical terms, yoga can be understood as a disciplined practice that encourages awareness and coordination between the body, breath and mind.

This does not mean that every yoga session must be complicated. Even a simple beginner practice can include mindful movement, conscious breathing and relaxation.

The deeper purpose of yoga is not simply to make the body flexible. It also encourages the learner to develop awareness, steadiness, concentration and a balanced approach to practice.

2. Yoga Is More Than Physical Exercise

Many people first discover yoga through physical postures called asanas.

Asanas are an important part of yoga practice, but yoga is broader than physical postures.

A complete yoga practice may include:

  • Physical postures
  • Breathing practices
  • Concentration
  • Relaxation
  • Meditation
  • Self-awareness
  • Disciplined daily practice

Therefore, yoga should not be understood only as stretching or exercise.

[PHOTO 2 – Yoga Practice Beyond Physical Exercise]

3. Body, Breath and Mind

One of the important ideas for a beginner is understanding the connection between body, breath and mind.

When the body moves, breathing can be observed.

When breathing becomes more controlled and steady, the mind may become easier to focus.

For example, during a simple yoga posture, a learner can observe:

  • Body position
  • Breathing pattern
  • Muscle effort
  • Balance
  • Mental attention

This type of observation helps turn ordinary movement into mindful practice.

4. What Are Asanas?

Asana is the Sanskrit term commonly used for yoga postures.

Yoga postures may involve:

  • Standing
  • Sitting
  • Balancing
  • Bending
  • Twisting
  • Stretching
  • Relaxing

Different postures have different purposes and levels of difficulty.

A beginner should not try to copy advanced poses immediately. The focus should first be on correct alignment, comfortable breathing, controlled movement and gradual progress.

[PHOTO 3 – Basic Yoga Posture Practice]

File Name: professional-yoga-class-2-basic-yoga-posture.jpg
Alt Text: Beginner yoga posture practice

5. Yoga and Breathing

Breathing is an important part of yoga practice.

In everyday life, breathing often happens automatically. During yoga, however, learners are encouraged to become more aware of their breathing.

Breathing awareness can help a learner:

  • Notice tension
  • Maintain attention
  • Coordinate movement and breath
  • Practice relaxation
  • Develop a calmer practice routine

Breathing should generally remain comfortable. Beginners should not force or hold the breath unnecessarily.

If a particular breathing technique is being taught, it should be learned gradually and with proper guidance.

6. What Is Pranayama?

Pranayama refers to yogic breathing practices.

Different traditional practices use different methods of breathing, such as controlled inhalation, exhalation and, in some techniques, breath retention.

However, beginners should not start advanced breathing techniques without understanding the method.

At the beginner level, the main objective is to learn:

  • Natural breathing awareness
  • Slow and comfortable breathing
  • Coordination between movement and breath
  • Basic breath observation

[PHOTO 4 – Yoga Breathing Practice]

File Name: professional-yoga-class-2-breathing-practice.jpg
Alt Text: Beginner yoga breathing awareness practice
Caption: Practicing comfortable breathing awareness as part of a beginner yoga session.

7. Yoga and Meditation

Meditation is another practice associated with yoga traditions.

Meditation generally involves training attention and developing awareness.

A beginner does not need to sit for a very long time.

Start with a short period of comfortable sitting.

Observe the breath.

Notice when the mind wanders.

Gently bring attention back.

This simple practice helps learners understand the role of attention and awareness.

8. Yoga and Relaxation

Relaxation is an important part of a balanced yoga session.

A learner should not think that every yoga practice must be physically demanding.

A session may include gentle movements followed by relaxation.

Relaxation gives the body an opportunity to settle after movement and allows the learner to observe breathing and physical sensations.

A simple relaxation practice may involve lying or sitting comfortably and observing the natural breath without forcing it.

[PHOTO 5 – Yoga Relaxation Practice]

File Name: professional-yoga-class-2-relaxation-practice.jpg
Alt Text: Beginner yoga relaxation practice

9. Yoga Compared With Ordinary Exercise

Yoga and exercise can both involve physical movement, but they may have different approaches.

Traditional yoga practice can combine:

  • Movement
  • Breath awareness
  • Concentration
  • Relaxation
  • Mindfulness

Ordinary exercise may focus more specifically on physical fitness, strength, endurance, speed or performance.

This does not mean one is better than the other. Yoga and other forms of exercise can serve different purposes and can sometimes complement one another.

The important point for this course is to understand yoga as a broader practice involving physical and mental awareness.

10. The Eight Limbs of Yoga

A foundational concept in classical yoga is the Eight Limbs of Yoga, described in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras.

They are commonly presented as:

  1. Yama
  2. Niyama
  3. Asana
  4. Pranayama
  5. Pratyahara
  6. Dharana
  7. Dhyana
  8. Samadhi

These concepts represent a broader path of yoga beyond physical postures.

At this stage, beginners do not need to memorize every detail. It is enough to understand that classical yoga includes ethical principles, personal discipline, physical practice, breath practices, withdrawal of attention, concentration, meditation and deeper states of awareness.

[PHOTO 6 – Eight Limbs of Yoga]

File Name: professional-yoga-class-2-eight-limbs-of-yoga.jpg
Alt Text: Eight limbs of yoga explained for beginners

11. Yama and Niyama

The first two limbs are Yama and Niyama.

Yama is commonly described through principles related to ethical and responsible conduct.

Niyama relates to personal discipline and observances.

These concepts remind learners that yoga is not only about physical flexibility.

A professional yoga learner should also understand the importance of discipline, responsible behavior, self-awareness and respectful practice.

12. Yoga Practice Requires Consistency

Yoga is a skill that develops through regular practice.

A beginner may not be flexible at the beginning. That is completely normal.

Instead of comparing yourself with advanced practitioners, focus on:

  • Regular practice
  • Correct technique
  • Comfortable breathing
  • Gradual progress
  • Awareness
  • Patience

Even a short, consistent practice can help establish a routine.

[PHOTO 7 – Consistent Yoga Practice]

File Name: professional-yoga-class-2-consistent-practice.jpg
Alt Text: Consistent yoga practice for beginners
Caption: Building a regular yoga routine through simple and consistent practice.

13. Yoga Is Not a Competition

One common mistake among beginners is comparing their body or flexibility with someone else's.

Yoga practice should not be treated as a competition.

Two people may have different:

  • Flexibility
  • Strength
  • Balance
  • Mobility
  • Previous experience
  • Body structure

Therefore, the same posture may look different for different people.

The learner should focus on safe and controlled practice rather than forcing the body into a particular shape.

14. Basic Principles for Beginners

A beginner should remember the following principles:

Start gradually

Do not begin with advanced postures.

Respect the body

Avoid forcing painful movements.

Breathe comfortably

Do not unnecessarily hold or force the breath.

Practice regularly

Consistency is more useful than occasional intense practice.

Learn technique

Understand the basic method before increasing difficulty.

Rest when needed

Rest is part of responsible practice.

[PHOTO 8 – Beginner Yoga Practice Principles]

File Name: professional-yoga-class-2-beginner-principles.jpg
Alt Text: Basic principles for safe beginner yoga practice
Caption: Important beginner principles including gradual practice, comfortable breathing and body awareness.

15. Creating a Simple Yoga Practice Routine

A beginner can start with a simple routine.

For example:

2–5 minutes: Comfortable breathing awareness

5–10 minutes: Gentle warm-up movements

10–15 minutes: Basic yoga postures

3–5 minutes: Comfortable breathing

5 minutes: Relaxation

The exact duration can vary according to the learner's experience, physical condition and guidance available.

The purpose is to develop a sustainable routine rather than rushing through difficult practices.

16. Creating a Suitable Practice Space

A yoga practice space does not need to be large.

Choose a place where you can:

  • Move safely
  • Place a yoga mat
  • Maintain reasonable cleanliness
  • Avoid unnecessary interruptions
  • Have enough ventilation

Wear comfortable clothing that allows movement.

Keep water available if appropriate, especially in a warm environment.

[PHOTO 9 – Simple Yoga Practice Space]

File Name: professional-yoga-class-2-yoga-practice-space.jpg
Alt Text: Simple home yoga practice space for beginners
Caption: A simple, clean and comfortable space prepared for beginner yoga practice.

17. Safety and Awareness

Yoga should be practiced with awareness.

A beginner should avoid forcing a movement just to achieve a particular shape.

Stop or modify a practice if there is significant pain, dizziness, unusual breathing difficulty or another concerning symptom.

People with medical conditions, injuries, pregnancy-related concerns or other specific health considerations should seek appropriate professional medical advice before starting or modifying a yoga program.

A professional yoga instructor should understand the importance of adapting practices to individual needs.

18. Class 2 Practice Activity

For this class, the learner should write or explain in their own words:

  1. What is yoga?
  2. What does the word Yoga mean?
  3. Why is yoga more than physical exercise?
  4. What are asanas?
  5. What is pranayama?
  6. How are body, breath and mind connected?
  7. What are the Eight Limbs of Yoga?
  8. Why is consistency important?
  9. Why should yoga not be treated as a competition?
  10. What are some basic principles for beginners?

This activity helps the learner understand the subject instead of simply memorizing terms.

1. Yoga

  • Physical postures
  • Breathing practices
  • Concentration
  • Relaxation
  • Meditation
  • Self-awareness
  • Disciplined daily practice

[PHOTO 2 – Yoga Practice Beyond Physical Exercise]

File Name: professional-yoga-class-2-yoga-beyond-exercise.jpg
Yoga practice

3. Body, Breath और Mind

  • Body position
  • Breathing pattern
  • Muscle effort
  • Balance
  • Mental attention

4. Asanas

Yoga postures

  • Standing
  • Sitting
  • Balancing
  • Bending
  • Twisting
  • Stretching
  • Relaxing

[PHOTO 3 – Basic Yoga Posture Practice]

File Name: professional-yoga-class-2-basic-yoga-posture.jpg
Alt Text: Beginner Yoga posture practice

5. Yoga और Breathing

Breathing Yoga practice

Breathing awareness learner को:

  • Tension notice करने
  • Attention
  • Relaxation practice करने
  • Calm practice routine

6. Pranayama

Beginner level

  • Natural breathing awareness
  • Slow और comfortable breathing
  • Movement और breath का coordination
  • Basic breath observation

[PHOTO 4 – Yoga Breathing Practice]

File Name: professional-yoga-class-2-breathing-practice.jpg
Alt Text: Beginner Yoga breathing awareness practice

7. Yoga और Meditation

8. Yoga और Relaxation

[PHOTO 5 – Yoga Relaxation Practice]

File Name: professional-yoga-class-2-relaxation-practice.jpg
Alt Text: Beginner Yoga relaxation practice
Caption: Gentle Yoga movements के बाद simple relaxation practice.

  • Movement
  • Breath awareness
  • Concentration
  • Relaxation
  • Mindfulness

10. Yoga के Eight Limbs

Classical Yoga की एक foundational concept है Eight Limbs of Yoga, जिसका वर्णन Patanjali के Yoga Sutras में किया गया है।

  1. Yama
  2. Niyama
  3. Asana
  4. Pranayama
  5. Pratyahara
  6. Dharana
  7. Dhyana
  8. Samadhi

[PHOTO 6 – Eight Limbs of Yoga]

File Name: professional-yoga-class-2-eight-limbs-of-yoga.jpg
Alt Text: Beginners के लिए Eight Limbs of Yoga

11. Yama और Niyama

12. Yoga Practice में Consistency

  • Regular practice
  • Correct technique
  • Comfortable breathing
  • Gradual progress
  • Awareness
  • Patience

[PHOTO 7 – Consistent Yoga Practice]

File Name: professional-yoga-class-2-consistent-practice.jpg

13. Yoga Competition

  • Flexibility
  • Strength
  • Balance
  • Mobility
  • Previous experience
  • Body structure

14. Beginners के लिए Basic Principles

Advanced postures

Body

Comfortable breathing

Regular practice

Technique

[PHOTO 8 – Beginner Yoga Practice Principles]

File Name: professional-yoga-class-2-beginner-principles.jpg
Alt Text: Safe beginner Yoga practice के basic principles

15. Simple Yoga Practice Routine

2–5 minutes: Comfortable breathing awareness

5–10 minutes: Gentle warm-up movements

10–15 minutes: Basic Yoga postures

3–5 minutes: Comfortable breathing

5 minutes: Relaxation

16. Suitable Practice Space

  • Safely move
  • Yoga mat
  • Unnecessary interruptions

[PHOTO 9 – Simple Yoga Practice Space]

File Name: professional-yoga-class-2-yoga-practice-space.jpg

17. Safety और Awareness

18. Class 2 Learning Activity

  1. Yoga
  4. Asanas
  5. Pranayama
  7. Eight Limbs of Yoga

  • Physical postures
  • Breathing practices
  • Concentration
  • Relaxation
  • Meditation
  • Self-awareness
  • Disciplined daily practice

[PHOTO 2 – Yoga Practice Beyond Physical Exercise]

Yoga practice

3. Body, Breath आणि Mind

  • Body position
  • Breathing pattern
  • Muscle effort
  • Balance
  • Mental attention

4. Asanas

Yoga postures

  • Standing
  • Sitting
  • Balancing
  • Bending
  • Twisting
  • Stretching
  • Relaxing

5. Yoga आणि Breathing

  • Tension
  • Attention
  • Movement आणि breath coordinate करणे
  • Relaxation
  • Calm practice routine

6. Pranayama

Beginner level

  • Natural breathing awareness
  • Slow आणि comfortable breathing
  • Movement आणि breath यांचा coordination
  • Basic breath observation

7. Yoga आणि Meditation

Breath observe

8. Yoga आणि Relaxation

Traditional Yoga practice

  • Movement
  • Breath awareness
  • Concentration
  • Relaxation
  • Mindfulness

10. Yoga चे Eight Limbs

Classical Yoga मधील एक foundational concept म्हणजे Eight Limbs of Yoga, ज्याचे वर्णन Patanjali यांच्या Yoga Sutras मध्ये केले आहे.

  1. Yama
  2. Niyama
  3. Asana
  4. Pranayama
  5. Pratyahara
  6. Dharana
  7. Dhyana
  8. Samadhi

11. Yama आणि Niyama

Niyama.

12. Yoga Practice मध्ये Consistency

  • Regular practice
  • Correct technique
  • Comfortable breathing
  • Gradual progress
  • Awareness
  • Patience

  • Flexibility
  • Strength
  • Balance
  • Mobility
  • Previous experience
  • Body structure

14. Beginners साठी Basic Principles

Advanced postures

Body

Painful movement force

Comfortable breathing

Regular practice

Technique

10–15 minutes: Basic Yoga postures

3–5 minutes: Comfortable breathing

5 minutes: Relaxation

16. Suitable Practice Space

  • Safely move
  • Yoga mat
  • Unnecessary interruptions

17. Safety आणि Awareness
