PROFESSIONAL MEHENDI COURSE

PROFESSIONAL MEHENDI CLASS -3 & COURSE

CLASS 3 OF 80 – HENNA POWDER

Complete Professional Knowledge, Quality, Safety, Selection & Practical Training

PART 1 – ENGLISH

1. Introduction

Henna powder is the basic raw material used in professional Mehendi work. A professional Mehendi artist should not select henna powder only by colour, smell, price or a seller’s claim. The artist should understand the plant source, powder quality, freshness, fineness, ingredients, packaging, storage, product records, stain behaviour and client-safety considerations.

This class is designed to give students a professional foundation before they move to Class 4 – Professional Henna Paste Preparation.

The purpose of this class is not simply to teach what henna powder is. Students should learn how to examine a powder, identify useful quality indicators, recognize warning signs, store it correctly, document the product and make an informed decision about whether a particular product is suitable for their intended professional workflow.

The actual preparation of henna paste will be taught separately in Class 4.

2. What Is Henna?

Henna is commonly associated with the plant Lawsonia inermis. The leaves of the plant contain natural colouring compounds, particularly lawsone, which can bind with suitable proteins and produce the characteristic orange, reddish-brown or brownish stain associated with traditional henna.

For professional training, it is useful to understand that henna is a plant-derived material, but “natural” should not automatically be treated as a guarantee that every product sold under the word henna is pure or suitable.

The professional artist must examine the actual product, its ingredients and its labeling rather than relying only on words such as:

  • Natural
  • Organic
  • Herbal
  • Instant
  • Dark
  • Bridal
  • Black
  • Chemical-free

Marketing terminology can vary from seller to seller. A professional should therefore learn product evaluation rather than depending only on advertising claims.

3. From Henna Plant to Henna Powder

Understanding the basic production process helps a student understand why powder quality can vary.

A simplified professional overview is:

Henna plant → leaves → drying → grinding → sieving → packaging → storage → professional use

The leaves need to be handled carefully because contamination, excessive moisture, unsuitable storage and poor processing can affect the final powder.

Professional-quality powder is generally expected to be clean, reasonably fine and appropriately packaged. However, the appearance of a powder alone cannot prove its purity.

4. Understanding Lawsone

Lawsone is the naturally occurring colouring compound associated with henna. During professional learning, students will hear terms such as:

  • Lawsone
  • Dye content
  • Dye release
  • Stain development
  • Stain oxidation

These terms are related but should not be treated as identical.

A dry powder is not the same thing as finished Mehendi paste. Similarly, the colour of dry powder does not directly predict the final stain.

The quality of the final result depends on several factors, including the henna material, preparation method, dye-release conditions, application, drying, aftercare and the individual skin environment.

The detailed paste-preparation and dye-release procedure will be covered in Class 4.

5. Why Henna Powder Quality Matters

A professional artist may work on:

  • Personal practice
  • Student practice
  • Festival Mehendi
  • Party Mehendi
  • Bridal Mehendi
  • Events
  • Workshops
  • Client appointments
  • International clients

In all these situations, predictable material behaviour is useful.

Poorly selected powder can create problems such as:

  • Difficult mixing
  • Uneven texture
  • Blocked cone flow
  • Weak or inconsistent staining
  • Excessive lumps
  • Unpleasant contamination-related odour
  • Poor storage stability
  • Unclear ingredient information
  • Difficulty reproducing a previous result

Professional work requires repeatability. Therefore, material selection is part of professional skill.

6. Important Quality Parameters

A student should learn to evaluate the following:

6.1 Fineness

Fine powder is generally easier to work with than coarse powder because a smoother material can support smoother paste and cone flow.

However, “very fine” by itself does not prove quality.

6.2 Sifting

Properly processed and sifted powder can contain fewer coarse particles.

For professional work, the artist should understand whether the powder is already suitable for the intended use or requires additional preparation.

6.3 Freshness

Henna is a plant material and its performance can change with age and storage conditions.

A professional should record:

  • Product name
  • Brand or supplier
  • Batch number, if available
  • Manufacturing date, if provided
  • Expiry or best-before information
  • Date opened
  • Storage conditions

6.4 Purity and Ingredient Information

Do not assume that a product is pure simply because the package says “henna.”

Read the ingredient information available on the product.

A professional artist should be cautious when:

  • Ingredients are missing
  • Product identity is unclear
  • Seller cannot explain the product
  • Packaging is damaged
  • Powder appears contaminated
  • The product has an unexplained unusual colour
  • Claims are inconsistent with the ingredient information

6.5 Packaging

Look for packaging that protects the powder from:

  • Moisture
  • Excessive heat
  • Air exposure
  • Dirt
  • Cross-contamination

7. Dry Powder Colour Is Not Final Stain Colour

One of the most important lessons in this class is:

Do not judge the final Mehendi stain only by looking at dry powder.

Dry powder may appear greenish, olive-green, brown-green or another natural-looking shade depending on the product and processing.

The eventual stain develops through the chemistry and application process. Therefore:

Dry powder colour ≠ final skin stain

Students should record actual results from controlled practice rather than comparing powder colours alone.

8. Smell and Texture

Traditional henna often has a recognizable plant-like, earthy or grassy smell.

However, smell alone cannot prove purity.

Similarly, texture can provide useful information but cannot independently establish product quality.

A professional assessment should combine:

Label + ingredients + packaging + freshness + physical appearance + supplier information + practical performance

rather than relying on one observation.

9. Moisture and Contamination Awareness

Dry henna powder should be protected from unnecessary moisture.

Moisture exposure may affect storage stability and can contribute to undesirable changes in the product.

Students should avoid:

  • Wet spoons
  • Wet measuring cups
  • Leaving packets open
  • Storing powder beside steam
  • Using contaminated containers
  • Mixing old and new batches without records

Use clean and completely dry equipment.

10. Storage of Henna Powder

Professional storage is simple but important.

A student should:

  1. Keep unused powder sealed.
  2. Protect it from moisture.
  3. Avoid unnecessary heat exposure.
  4. Use clean, dry measuring tools.
  5. Record when a packet is opened.
  6. Follow the manufacturer's storage instructions.
  7. Avoid storing powder in a place exposed to steam.
  8. Keep product packaging or batch information for reference.
  9. Use older suitable stock according to its stated shelf-life and storage instructions rather than keeping products indefinitely.

For larger professional operations, a material log can be maintained.

Example:

Product: Henna Powder
Supplier: __________
Batch: __________
Opened: __________
Best Before/Expiry: __________
Storage: __________
Observation: __________

11. Common Categories of Henna Products

Students may encounter different product descriptions in the market.

11.1 Natural Henna Powder

Usually refers to plant-based henna powder intended to produce traditional henna staining.

11.2 Fine-Sifted Henna Powder

A powder processed for finer texture and smoother professional application.

11.3 Practice Henna Powder

May be sold for student or practice purposes. The student should still check the product information.

11.4 Bridal-Use Henna

The term may be used as a marketing description. It does not automatically establish a particular quality standard.

11.5 Pre-Mixed or Ready-to-Use Products

These require greater attention to the ingredient list, manufacturer's directions, shelf-life and intended use.

Students should never assume that every ready-made product is equivalent to freshly prepared traditional henna paste.

12. Natural Henna and “Black Henna” Awareness

A professional Mehendi artist must understand the difference between traditional henna and products marketed as “black henna.”

Natural henna traditionally produces orange, reddish-brown or brownish staining rather than an instant jet-black skin stain.

Products marketed as “black henna” may contain additional dyes. The U.S. FDA warns that products marketed as black henna can contain p-phenylenediamine (PPD), which can cause serious skin reactions in some people. FDA also states that henna is approved in the U.S. only for use as a hair dye and not for direct skin application; professional requirements and regulation differ by jurisdiction.

Therefore, a professional artist should never add hair dye or unknown colouring chemicals to henna simply to make the stain black.

Professional rule:

Never use an unknown blackening chemical on a client's skin.

Alt Text: Educational comparison of natural henna and black henna safety awareness
Caption: Professional Mehendi artists must understand the difference between natural henna and products marketed as black henna, especially when ingredient safety is unclear. Comment • Like • Share

13. Product Label Checking

Before opening a new packet, a professional student should inspect the package.

Check for:

  • Product name
  • Ingredient information
  • Manufacturer or responsible business information
  • Batch or lot information, if supplied
  • Manufacturing date, if supplied
  • Expiry or best-before information
  • Storage instructions
  • Intended-use information
  • Warning information
  • Packaging condition

The exact labeling requirements differ according to country, product category and intended use.

For international professional work, students should learn to check the requirements applicable to the country where the service is being provided.

14. International Professional Awareness

A Mehendi artist working internationally may encounter different:

  • Cosmetic regulations
  • Product-labeling rules
  • Salon regulations
  • Event requirements
  • Temporary body-art rules
  • Insurance requirements
  • Hygiene expectations
  • Client-consent practices

Therefore, there is no single international rule that automatically applies everywhere.

A professional should verify local requirements before providing commercial services in another country.

The FDA notes that temporary tattoo, henna and professional practices can involve state or local regulation in the United States, illustrating why jurisdiction-specific checking is necessary.

15. Skin-Safety and Client Awareness

A professional Mehendi artist should not present themselves as a medical professional.

The artist's role is to use suitable materials responsibly, follow product directions and maintain clean working practices.

If a client reports:

  • Previous severe reaction
  • Known allergy to a product ingredient
  • Previous reaction to “black henna”
  • Skin damage or active irritation
  • Unexplained sensitivity

the artist should not dismiss the concern.

The client may need professional medical advice before using a product.

A patch test should not be presented as a guarantee that a reaction cannot occur. Product instructions and applicable local guidance should be followed.

16. Hygiene During Powder Handling

A professional workstation should be:

  • Clean
  • Dry
  • Organized
  • Easy to wipe
  • Protected from unnecessary contamination

Students should wash or sanitize hands according to appropriate hygiene practice, keep tools clean, avoid touching powder with dirty hands and prevent cross-contamination between products.

17. Professional Batch Records

A serious Mehendi artist should learn simple documentation.

For every important product, record:

Product: __________
Brand: __________
Supplier: __________
Batch/Lot: __________
Purchase Date: __________
Opened Date: __________
Best Before/Expiry: __________
Storage: __________
Practice Result: __________
Notes: __________

This becomes useful when a professional wants to reproduce a successful result or identify a product that did not perform as expected.

18. What a Student Should Observe Practically

During this class, students should examine at least one henna powder packet.

Record:

  1. Product name
  2. Ingredient information
  3. Package condition
  4. Batch details
  5. Date information
  6. Storage instruction
  7. Powder appearance
  8. Powder texture
  9. Smell
  10. Supplier information
  11. Intended use
  12. Any warning or missing information

The goal is to develop observation and documentation skills.

19. Student Practical Exercise

Exercise 1 – Powder Inspection

Take one unopened packet.

Complete:

Product Name:
Brand:
Ingredients:
Batch:
Date:
Expiry/Best Before:
Storage:
Colour/Appearance:
Texture:
Smell:
Packaging Condition:
Professional Notes:

Exercise 2 – Compare Two Products

If two products are available, compare:

  • Ingredient information
  • Fineness
  • Packaging
  • Date information
  • Storage instructions
  • Supplier information
  • Practical suitability

Do not decide that one is better simply because it is more expensive.

20. Common Mistakes Students Should Avoid

Do not:

  • Buy unknown powder only because it promises a very dark stain.
  • Assume green powder automatically means high quality.
  • Use damaged or contaminated packets.
  • Store powder in humid areas.
  • Mix wet tools into dry powder.
  • Remove the original product information.
  • Mix different batches without documentation.
  • Add unknown chemicals to make the stain darker.
  • Use hair dye as a skin-staining ingredient.
  • Promise every client a specific stain colour.
  • Treat a patch test as an absolute guarantee.
  • Ignore a client's previous reaction history.
  • Claim medical or dermatological expertise without qualifications.

21. Professional Quality Checklist

Before using a henna powder, ask:

1. Do I know what the product is?
2. Can I identify its ingredients or product information?
3. Is the packaging intact?
4. Is the product within its stated shelf-life?
5. Has it been stored appropriately?
6. Can I identify the batch or lot if available?
7. Is the powder physically suitable for my intended workflow?
8. Am I avoiding unknown blackening chemicals?
9. Am I following applicable local requirements?
10. Have I documented the product?

If the answer to several questions is “no,” the artist should stop and investigate before using the material professionally.

22. Dye Release – Introduction Only

Dye release is an important concept because the natural colouring compounds in henna need suitable conditions before the paste reaches an effective application stage.

Students should understand the difference between:

Dry powder → prepared paste → dye-release stage → application → stain development

However, the exact mixing method, liquid selection, consistency control, resting conditions, testing and paste management belong to Class 4.

Therefore, Class 3 introduces the concept but does not replace Class 4.

23. Student Assignment

Prepare a Henna Powder Quality Assessment Sheet.

Include:

  • Product photograph or product identification
  • Product name
  • Brand
  • Ingredients
  • Batch number
  • Date
  • Storage instruction
  • Powder appearance
  • Texture
  • Smell
  • Packaging condition
  • Intended use
  • Safety observations
  • Professional conclusion

The student should not write only “good” or “bad.”

Instead, write the reasons for the observation.

24. Learning Outcomes

–

Henna powder professional Mehendi work का मूल raw material है।

2. Henna

Henna plant → leaves → drying → grinding → sieving → packaging → storage → professional use

Alt Text: Professional henna plant leaves and natural henna powder preparation process
Comment • Like • Share

4. Lawsone

  • Lawsone
  • Dye content
  • Dye release
  • Stain development
  • Stain oxidation

  • Powder quality
  • Paste preparation
  • Dye-release conditions
  • Application
  • Drying
  • Aftercare
  • Individual skin environment

Detailed paste preparation Class 4

5. Henna Powder Quality

  • Personal practice
  • Student practice
  • Festival Mehendi
  • Party Mehendi
  • Bridal Mehendi
  • Events
  • Workshops
  • Client appointments
  • International clients

Poorly selected powder

  • Uneven texture
  • Cone blockage
  • Weak या inconsistent staining
  • Lumps
  • Storage problems
  • Product information

6. Important Quality Parameters

6.1 Fineness

6.2 Sifting

6.3 Freshness

Professional record

  • Product name
  • Brand/supplier
  • Batch number
  • Manufacturing date,
  • Expiry/best-before
  • Date opened
  • Storage condition

6.4 Purity और Ingredients

Available ingredient information

  • Ingredients information
  • Product identity clear
  • Seller product explain
  • Packaging damaged है
  • Powder contaminated

6.5 Packaging

Dry powder colour ≠ Final skin stain

8. Smell और Texture

Traditional henna में plant-like, earthy या grassy smell हो सकती है।

Label + ingredients + packaging + freshness + physical appearance + supplier information + practical performance

9. Moisture और Contamination Awareness

Moisture exposure storage stability

Avoid करें:

  • Wet spoon
  • Wet measuring cup
  • Packet
  • Steam के पास storage
  • Dirty container
  • बिना record के old और new batch मिलाना

10. Henna Powder Storage

Professional storage के basic rules:

  1. Unused powder sealed
  2. Moisture
  3. Excessive heat
  5. Packet opening date record करें।
  6. Manufacturer की storage instructions follow करें।
  8. Batch/product information

Product: __________
Supplier: __________
Batch: __________
Opened: __________
Best Before/Expiry: __________
Storage: __________
Observation: __________

Henna Product Categories

11.1 Natural Henna Powder

11.2 Fine-Sifted Henna Powder

Fine texture और smoother application के लिए processed powder।

11.3 Practice Henna Powder

11.4 Bridal Henna

Ready-to-Use Products

12. Natural Henna और Black Henna Awareness

Professional Rule:

13. Product Label Checking

  • Product name
  • Ingredients
  • Manufacturer/responsible business information
  • Batch/lot information
  • Manufacturing date
  • Expiry/best-before
  • Storage instructions
  • Intended use
  • Warning information
  • Packaging condition

14. International Professional Awareness

  • Cosmetic regulations
  • Product labeling rules
  • Salon requirements
  • Event requirements
  • Temporary body-art requirements
  • Insurance requirements
  • Hygiene expectations
  • Client-consent practices

15. Skin Safety और Client Awareness

  • Suitable product information देखे
  • Manufacturer directions follow करे
  • Clean working practices

16. Powder Handling Hygiene

Professional workstation:

  • Clean
  • Dry
  • Organized
  • Easy to clean
  • Unnecessary contamination से protected

Student को:

  • Clean hands
  • Clean tools
  • Dry measuring equipment
  • Clean containers

17. Professional Batch Records

Product: __________
Brand: __________
Supplier: __________
Batch/Lot: __________
Purchase Date: __________
Opened Date: __________
Best Before/Expiry: __________
Storage: __________
Practice Result: __________
Notes: __________

20. Common Student Mistakes

  • Damaged packet
  • Humid जगह पर storage
  • Wet spoon से powder लेना
  • Original label
  • Batch information record न करना
  • Unknown chemical add

PART 3 – MARATHI

2. Henna

Professional training

Market

  • Natural
  • Organic
  • Herbal
  • Bridal
  • Dark
  • Instant
  • Chemical-free

Henna plant → leaves → drying → grinding → sieving → packaging → storage → professional use

Comment • Like • Share

4. Lawsone

Professional Mehendi training

  • Lawsone
  • Dye content
  • Dye release
  • Stain development
  • Stain oxidation

Final result

  • Powder quality
  • Paste preparation
  • Dye-release conditions
  • Application
  • Drying
  • Aftercare
  • Individual skin environment

  • Personal practice
  • Student practice
  • Festival Mehendi
  • Party Mehendi
  • Bridal Mehendi
  • Events
  • Workshops
  • Client appointments
  • International clients

Poorly selected powder

  • Mixing
  • Uneven texture
  • Cone blockage
  • Weak किंवा inconsistent stain
  • Lumps
  • Storage problems
  • Product information
  • Previous result

6. Quality तपासताना महत्त्वाचे Parameters

6.1 Fineness

6.2 Sifting

6.3 Freshness

Professional record

  • Product name
  • Brand/Supplier
  • Batch number
  • Manufacturing date,
  • Expiry/Best-before
  • Date opened
  • Storage condition

6.4 Purity आणि Ingredients

Available ingredient information

  • Ingredients information नाही
  • Product identity
  • Seller product
  • Packaging damaged आहे
  • Powder contaminated

6.5 Packaging

Packaging मुळे powder ला:

  • Moisture
  • Excessive heat
  • Air exposure
  • Dirt
  • Cross-contamination

Dry powder colour ≠ Final skin stain

8. Smell आणि Texture

Traditional henna मध्ये plant-like, earthy किंवा grassy smell असू शकतो.

Professional assessment

Label + Ingredients + Packaging + Freshness + Physical Appearance + Supplier Information + Practical Performance

9. Moisture आणि Contamination Awareness

  • Wet spoon
  • Wet measuring cup
  • Packet
  • Steam जवळ powder ठेवणे
  • Contaminated container
  • Record न ठेवता old आणि new batch mix करणे

10. Henna Powder Storage

Professional storage चे basic rules:

  1. Unused powder sealed
  3. Excessive heat
  4. Clean आणि dry measuring tools वापरा.
  5. Packet उघडल्याची date लिहा.
  6. Manufacturer च्या storage instructions follow करा.
  9. Product च्या stated shelf-life आणि storage instructions नुसार वापरा.

Product: __________
Supplier: __________
Batch: __________
Opened: __________
Best Before/Expiry: __________
Storage: __________
Observation: __________

11. Market मध्ये मिळणाऱ्या Henna Product Categories

11.1 Natural Henna Powder

Plant-based traditional henna powder

11.2 Fine-Sifted Henna Powder

Fine texture आणि smoother professional application साठी processed powder.

11.3 Practice Henna Powder

11.4 Bridal Henna

Ready-to-Use Products

या products मध्ये ingredients, manufacturer's directions, shelf-life आणि intended use काळजीपूर्वक तपासावे.

प्रत्येक ready-made product ला traditional fresh henna paste सारखे समजू नये.

12. Natural Henna आणि “Black Henna” Awareness

Professional Rule:

13. Product Label Checking

  • Product name
  • Ingredients
  • Manufacturer/responsible business information
  • Batch/Lot information
  • Manufacturing date
  • Expiry/Best-before
  • Storage instructions
  • Intended use
  • Warning information
  • Packaging condition

14. International Professional Awareness

  • Cosmetic regulations
  • Product-labeling rules
  • Salon requirements
  • Event requirements
  • Temporary body-art rules
  • Insurance requirements
  • Hygiene expectations
  • Client-consent practices

मध्ये temporary tattoo, henna आणि professional practices संबंधित काही requirements state/local authorities कडून वेगळ्या प्रकारे regulate होऊ शकतात.

15. Skin Safety आणि Client Awareness

Artist

  • Suitable product information
  • Manufacturer directions follow करणे
  • Clean working practices
  • Client safety concern

  • Skin irritated

16. Powder Handling Hygiene

Professional workstation:

  • Clean
  • Dry
  • Organized
  • Unnecessary contamination

17. Professional Batch Records

Product: __________
Brand: __________
Supplier: __________
Batch/Lot: __________
Purchase Date: __________
Opened Date: __________
Best Before/Expiry: __________
Storage: __________
Practice Result: __________
Notes: __________

  1. Product name
  2. Brand
  3. Ingredients
  4. Package condition
  5. Batch details
  6. Date information
  7. Storage instruction
  8. Powder appearance
  9. Powder texture
  10. Smell
  11. Supplier information
  12. Intended use
  13. Warning information

19. Student Practical Exercise

Exercise 1 – Powder Inspection

एक unopened packet inspect करा.

Product Name:
Brand:
Ingredients:
Batch:
Date:
Expiry/Best Before:
Storage:
Appearance:
Texture:
Smell:
Packaging Condition:
Professional Notes:

Exercise 2 – Two Products Comparison

  • Ingredients
  • Fineness
  • Packaging
  • Date information
  • Storage instructions
  • Supplier information
  • Intended use
  • Practical suitability

Common Mistakes

  • Damaged packet
  • Humid जागेत storage करणे
  • Wet spoon
  • Original label
  • Batch information
  • Unknown chemical add करणे
  • Hair dye skin staining
  • Client ला guaranteed stain colour सांगणे
  • Patch test ला absolute guarantee समजणे
  • Previous reaction history
  • Qualification नसताना medical advice देणे

21. Professional Quality Checklist

2. Ingredients/product information
3. Packaging intact
6. Batch/Lot information
8. Unknown blackening chemicals
9. Applicable local requirements
10. Product documentation complete

22. Dye Release – फक्त Introduction

Basic sequence:

Dry powder → prepared paste → dye-release stage → application → stain development

23. Student Assignment

Henna Powder Quality Assessment Sheet

  • Product identification
  • Product name
  • Brand
  • Ingredients
  • Batch
  • Date
  • Storage
  • Appearance
  • Texture
  • Smell
  • Packaging condition
  • Intended use
  • Safety observations
  • Professional conclusion
