PROFESSIONAL MEHENDI COURSE – CLASS 8
PROFESSIONAL MEHENDI COURSE – CLASS 8
Dots, Leaves and Flowers
Sarode Writes
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ENGLISH SECTION ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Introduction
In Professional Mehendi Course – Class 8, we will learn three basic design elements that are used in a large number of Mehendi patterns: Dots, Leaves and Flowers.
These three elements may look simple, but learning them correctly is important because they help a Mehendi artist create borders, vines, floral patterns, fillers, corners, motifs and complete compositions.
A professional design is not created only by drawing complicated patterns. It is created by controlling the cone, maintaining suitable spacing, keeping the design balanced and placing small elements correctly.
Dots help fill empty spaces and create rhythm. Leaves give direction and movement to a design. Flowers can become the main focal point of a motif.
When these three elements are combined properly, a learner can gradually move from simple practice designs to more organised professional Mehendi compositions.
[PHOTO 1 – Basic dots, leaves and flowers practice sheet]
- Learning Objectives
After completing this class, the learner should understand:
• How to make controlled Mehendi dots.
• How to maintain similar dot sizes.
• How to create small and elongated leaves.
• How to draw leaf veins and details.
• How to create simple flower shapes.
• How to maintain spacing between design elements.
• How to control cone pressure while making small details.
• How to combine dots, leaves and flowers.
• How to create a simple floral vine.
• How to identify and correct common mistakes.
• How to practise these elements systematically.
The objective is not only to copy a design. The learner should understand how each element is constructed so that the same principles can be used to create new designs independently.
- Why Dots Are Important
Dots are among the smallest elements in Mehendi, but they have an important role.
A dot can be used:
• As a filler.
• Around a flower.
• Between two leaves.
• At the end of a line.
• Along a border.
• Inside a floral design.
• To create symmetry.
• To fill a small empty space.
Dots also help create visual rhythm. When several dots are placed with controlled spacing, they can make a simple design look organised.
The important point is consistency. If one dot is very large and the next one is extremely small without a design reason, the pattern may look uneven.
- Practising Basic Dots
To make a basic dot, place the cone tip gently on the skin or practice sheet and apply a small amount of pressure.
Press → release → lift.
The movement should be controlled.
Do not drag the cone while making a simple dot.
Start with very small dots. Then practise medium-sized dots. Finally, practise a sequence containing small and medium dots.
Try to make:
• 10 small dots
• 10 medium dots
• 10 larger dots
• 10 dots in a straight line
• 10 dots in a curved line
The purpose is to train hand control.
- Dot Size and Spacing
A professional Mehendi design does not require every dot to be exactly identical. However, the dots should look intentional.
Practise:
Small • Small • Small • Small
Then:
Small • Medium • Small • Medium
Then practise gradually increasing the size.
Spacing is equally important.
If dots are placed too close together, they may merge when the Mehendi is applied.
If they are too far apart, the design may lose continuity.
The correct spacing depends on the design, the size of the motif and the area available.
- Creating Lines with Dots
Dots can be used to decorate simple lines.
For example:
• • • • • • •
A curved dotted line can be used around flowers, leaves or borders.
Practise dotted lines in:
• Straight direction
• Curved direction
• Circular direction
• Semi-circular direction
• Diagonal direction
This practice improves control and helps the learner understand how dots can follow the movement of a design.
- Understanding Leaves
Leaves are one of the most useful floral elements in Mehendi.
A basic leaf can be created using two curved lines that meet at a point.
Start with one side of the leaf.
Then create the second side.
Bring both sides together at the tip.
The leaf can then be filled or decorated according to the design.
Leaves can be:
• Small
• Long
• Round
• Narrow
• Wide
• Curved
• Pointed
• Clustered
Different leaf shapes help create variety.
[PHOTO 2 – Different basic leaf shapes and sizes]
- Direction of Leaves
The direction of a leaf affects the movement of the entire design.
Leaves can point:
• Upward
• Downward
• Left
• Right
• Towards a flower
• Away from a flower
• Along a curved vine
A common beginner mistake is drawing every leaf in exactly the same direction.
Instead, observe the main line of the design.
If the vine curves to the right, the leaves can follow that movement.
If the vine turns downward, the leaves can be positioned accordingly.
This creates flow.
- Leaf Veins and Details
A simple leaf can be decorated with a central vein.
First draw the outer leaf shape.
Then make a fine line from the base towards the tip.
Small diagonal lines can be added if the design requires more detail.
However, too many internal lines can make a small leaf crowded.
The learner should practise both:
• Plain leaves
• Detailed leaves
Plain leaves are useful for simple and modern designs.
Detailed leaves are useful for traditional and decorative compositions.
- Creating Flowers
Flowers can be made in many styles.
For beginner practice, start with simple flowers rather than complicated floral compositions.
A basic flower can have:
• A central dot
• Five petals
• Six petals
• More petals depending on the design
Begin with the centre.
Then create petals around it.
Try to maintain approximately equal spacing between the petals.
The petals do not need to be mathematically identical, but they should look balanced.
- Simple Five-Petal Flower
Start with one central point.
Create the first petal.
Continue around the centre until the flower is complete.
Practise several flowers of the same size.
Then practise flowers of different sizes.
For example:
Small flower → medium flower → large flower
This helps the learner understand proportion.
- Flower Petal Shapes
Petals can be:
• Round
• Pointed
• Long
• Short
• Curved
• Teardrop-shaped
Different petal shapes create different visual effects.
A beginner should first become comfortable with one or two simple petal shapes.
After gaining control, different shapes can be combined.
- Flower Centre
The centre of a flower can be decorated with:
• One dot
• Several dots
• A small circle
• Short lines
• Tiny petals
• A spiral
• A combination of dots and lines
The centre should not always be overloaded with details.
A small centre can sometimes make the petals more noticeable.
- Combining Dots, Leaves and Flowers
This is one of the most important exercises in this class.
A simple composition can follow this structure:
Flower → Leaves → Dots
Another composition can be:
Leaf → Flower → Leaf → Dots
Or:
Flower → Leaf cluster → Dotted filler → Leaf
The learner should practise connecting these elements without making the design crowded.
[PHOTO 3 – Combined dots, leaves and flowers motif]
- Maintaining Balance
Balance means distributing the elements properly.
For example, if one side of a flower has three large leaves and the other side has only one tiny leaf, the design may look visually uneven.
Balance can be created through:
• Similar element sizes
• Controlled spacing
• Repeated patterns
• Appropriate direction
• Proper distribution of fillers
Balance does not always mean exact symmetry.
A design can be asymmetrical and still look well organised.
- Cone Pressure
Cone pressure directly affects the thickness of the line and size of the dot.
More pressure generally produces more paste.
Less pressure produces a finer line.
While practising small leaves and flower details, avoid pressing the cone too strongly.
Hold the cone comfortably.
Keep the hand steady.
Move the cone at a controlled speed.
The learner should practise:
Light pressure → medium pressure → controlled release
[PHOTO 4 – Cone pressure practice for fine lines and floral details]
- Creating a Floral Vine
A floral vine can be created by first drawing a flowing curved line.
Then add leaves along the line.
Place flowers at suitable points.
Finally add dots as fillers.
For example:
Curved vine
↓
Leaves
↓
Flower
↓
Small leaves
↓
Dots
The vine should have a natural direction rather than looking like separate objects placed randomly.
- Spacing Between Elements
Spacing is one of the most important skills in Mehendi.
Avoid placing every element at exactly the same distance.
Instead, use spacing according to the design.
Small dots can be placed close together.
Larger flowers require more breathing space.
Large leaves should not overlap unnecessarily with nearby flowers unless overlapping is intentionally part of the design.
- Practice Exercise 1 – Dots
Draw five rows.
Row 1: Small dots
Row 2: Medium dots
Row 3: Large dots
Row 4: Increasing-size dots
Row 5: Decreasing-size dots
Repeat the exercise until the hand becomes comfortable.
- Practice Exercise 2 – Leaves
Draw 20 basic leaves.
Then make:
• 5 narrow leaves
• 5 wide leaves
• 5 curved leaves
• 5 detailed leaves
Compare their shape and spacing.
- Practice Exercise 3 – Flowers
Draw:
• 5 small flowers
• 5 medium flowers
• 5 large flowers
• 5 flowers with different centres
The purpose is to practise proportion and control.
- Practice Exercise 4 – Complete Motif
Create one small motif using:
1 flower
3 leaves
5–10 dots
Then create a second motif using:
2 flowers
5 leaves
dots as fillers
Try not to copy the first arrangement exactly.
Change the direction and spacing.
- Common Mistakes
Beginners commonly make the following mistakes:
• Pressing the cone too hard.
• Making dots unnecessarily large.
• Keeping leaves uneven.
• Making petals overlap unintentionally.
• Filling every empty space.
• Using too many details in a small area.
• Ignoring the direction of the main vine.
• Making all leaves face the same direction.
• Making the design too crowded.
The solution is controlled practice.
Do not try to make a complex design immediately.
First practise individual elements.
Then combine them.
- Professional Practice Tips
A learner preparing for professional Mehendi work should practise regularly.
Keep a practice sheet.
Date each practice session if possible.
Record which elements were difficult.
Repeat the same exercise until hand control improves.
Practise both slow and moderate-speed drawing.
Do not focus only on speed.
Accuracy and control should come first. Speed develops naturally with repeated practice.
The final goal is to understand how dots, leaves and flowers work together so that the learner can create variations instead of depending only on copied designs.
Conclusion – English
Dots, leaves and flowers are foundational elements of Mehendi design.
Dots help with rhythm and filling.
Leaves create direction and movement.
Flowers can become the main decorative element.
When these three elements are practised separately and then combined, the learner develops better control over spacing, cone pressure, proportion and composition.
The learner should continue practising these elements before moving to more advanced floral patterns.

Flowers.
- Learning Objectives
• Controlled Mehendi dots
• Simple flowers
• Simple floral vine
• Common mistakes
- Dots
Dots
• Filler
• Flower
• Border में।
• Floral design
• Symmetry
- Basic Dots
Press → release → lift.
• 10 medium dots
• 10 बड़े dots
• 10 straight-line dots
• 10 curved-line dots
Spacing
Small • Small • Small • Small
Small • Medium • Small • Medium
Spacing design, motif
• Straight
• Curved
• Circular
• Semi-circular
• Diagonal
- Leaves
• Small
• Long
• Round
• Narrow
• Wide
• Curved
• Pointed
• Clustered
Direction
Leaves:
• Flower
• Flower
• Curved vine
Details
• Plain leaves
• Detailed leaves
- Flowers
• Central dot
• Five petals
• Six petals
- Simple Five-Petal Flower
Small flower → Medium flower → Large flower
- Flower Petal Shapes
• Round
• Pointed
• Long
• Short
• Curved
• Teardrop-shaped
- Flower Centre
• Tiny petals
• Spiral
Flower → Leaves → Dots
दूसरी composition:
Leaf → Flower → Leaf → Dots
या:
Flower → Leaf cluster → Dotted filler → Leaf
[PHOTO 5 – Dots, leaves and flowers का combined Mehendi motif]
- Balance
Balance
• Similar element sizes
• Controlled spacing
• Repeated patterns
- Cone Pressure
Cone
Light pressure → Medium pressure → Controlled release
[PHOTO 6 – Fine line और cone pressure practice]
- Floral Vine
Curved vine
↓
Leaves
↓
Flower
↓
Small leaves
↓
Dots
Spacing
Spacing design
Small dots
- Practice Exercise 1 – Dots
पाँच rows बनाएं।
Row 1: Small dots
Row 2: Medium dots
Row 3: Large dots
Row 4: Increasing-size dots
Row 5: Decreasing-size dots
- Practice Exercise 2 – Leaves
20 basic leaves
• 5 narrow leaves
• 5 wide leaves
• 5 curved leaves
• 5 detailed leaves
- Practice Exercise 3 – Flowers
• 5 small flowers
• 5 medium flowers
• 5 large flowers
• 5 different-centre flowers
[PHOTO 7 – Flower size और petal practice sheet]
- Practice Exercise 4 – Complete Motif
1 flower
3 leaves
5–10 dots
2 flowers
5 leaves
Dots as fillers
- Common Mistakes
• Cone
- Professional Practice Tips

- Learning Objectives
• Controlled Mehendi dots
• Simple flowers
• Simple floral vine
• Common mistakes
- Dots
Dots
• Filler
• Flower
• Border
• Floral design
• Symmetry
- Basic Dots
Press → release → lift.
• 10 medium dots
• 10 मोठे dots
• 10 straight-line dots
• 10 curved-line dots
Spacing
Small • Small • Small • Small
Small • Medium • Small • Medium
• Straight
• Curved
• Circular
• Semi-circular
• Diagonal
- Leaves
Leaves
• Small
• Long
• Round
• Narrow
• Wide
• Curved
• Pointed
• Clustered
Direction
Leaves:
• वर
• Flower कडे
• Flower
• Curved vine
Details
• Plain leaves
• Detailed leaves
- Flowers
• Central dot
• Five petals
• Six petals
- Simple Five-Petal Flower
Small flower → Medium flower → Large flower
- Flower Petal Shapes
• Round
• Pointed
• Long
• Short
• Curved
• Teardrop-shaped
- Flower Centre
• Tiny petals
• Spiral
Flower → Leaves → Dots
Leaf → Flower → Leaf → Dots
Flower → Leaf cluster → Dotted filler → Leaf
- Balance
Balance
• Similar element sizes
• Controlled spacing
• Repeated patterns
- Cone Pressure
Cone
हात steady ठेवा.
Cone controlled speed
Light pressure → Medium pressure → Controlled release
- Floral Vine
Curved vine

Leaves

Flower

Small leaves

Dots
Vine ची movement natural असावी.
Elements random
Spacing
Small dots
Large flowers
- Practice Exercise 1 – Dots
Row 1: Small dots
Row 2: Medium dots
Row 3: Large dots
Row 4: Increasing-size dots
Row 5: Decreasing-size dots
- Practice Exercise 2 – Leaves
20 basic leaves
• 5 narrow leaves
• 5 wide leaves
• 5 curved leaves
• 5 detailed leaves
[PHOTO 9 – Different leaf shapes, sizes and details practice]
- Practice Exercise 3 – Flowers
• 5 small flowers
• 5 medium flowers
• 5 large flowers
• 5 different-centre flowers
- Practice Exercise 4 – Complete Motif
1 flower
3 leaves
5–10 dots
2 flowers
5 leaves
Dots as fillers
- Common Mistakes
• Cone
• Dots

- Professional Practice Tips
Marathi
